How to Read Your Dog Just by Watching Her Tail

Roxie wagging her tail....Roxie is so cute and she just turned 10 years old Christmas Eve.  She drives me crazy sometime when she barks for no reason.  I thought this article was worth sharing and now I am going to start paying attention to her tail.  lol….

By Dr. Becker

New research suggests dogs send messages to each other through tail wags.

According to a study published in a recent issue of Current Biology,1 the direction of a wag is quite significant. What looks like just another friendly wag to you or me is actually communicating important information to other dogs.

As it turns out, when dogs are feeling stressed they tend to wag their tails to the left. The reason for this, according to the study’s lead author, Giorgio Vallortigara of the University of Trento in Italy, is that tail wagging is a reflection of what’s going on in a dog’s brain. Activation of the left-brain causes the tail to wag to the right, and activation of the right-brain produces a wag to the left.

Tail Wags to the Right Signal Openness, Wags to the Left Signal Wariness

In an earlier study, Vallortigara and his team demonstrated that dogs wag to the right side when they encounter something pleasant (like their owners). When they see something threatening, for example, a strange dog exhibiting dominant behaviors, they wag more to the left side. Those study results raised the question of whether dogs notice another dog’s tail wagging and use the information to decide whether the dog with the wagging tail is friend or foe.

For the most recent study, Vallortigara and his team used videos of a dog or dog silhouette wagging its tail mostly to one side or the other, or not wagging at all. The only thing moving in the wagging videos was the tail.

The video was shown to 43 dogs, including mixed breeds, Rottweilers, Beagles, Boxers, Border Collies, and German Shepherds, who were equipped with heart rate monitors. When the video dog wagged primarily to its left, indicating a negative response, the dogs in the study tended to have faster heartbeats than when the video dog wagged to the right or not at all. The dogs’ response also suggested a higher degree of stress.

Left-brain activity in dogs resulting in tail wagging to the right means they are having a positive response that invites another dog to approach. Right-brain activation suggests a negative withdrawal response.

Study Concludes Dogs Read the Tail Wags of Other Dogs

The study concluded that dogs who see another dog wagging to the left experience anxiety and elevated heart rates, whereas dogs who see another dog wagging to the right remain relaxed.

The researchers don’t believe the dogs are intentionally sending signals with their tails, but rather the tail wagging is a consequence of the inner workings of the canine brain. Tail-wagging behavior results from the way in which different emotional signals activate different parts of a dog’s brain.

“These results suggest that dogs have perceptual and attentional asymmetries,” says Vallortigara. “So for example, if you are going to visit a dog, if you are vet, there will be probably a side which is better with respect to the probability to evoke a more friendship response or to evoke a more aggressive response.”

Fire Out Of Control

resentment is the cocaine of emotions.....
Resentment is the cocaine of the emotions.  It causes our blood to pump and our energy level to rise.  Like cocaine, it demands increasingly large and more frequent dosages.

There is dangerous point at which anger ceases to be an emotion and becomes a driving force.  A person bent on revenge moves unknowingly further and further away from being able to forgive, for to be without the anger is to be without a source of energy.

Hatred is the rabid dog that turns on its owner.

Would David Delete His Facebook Friends?

Why should you not delete your facebook friends David had many people who lied about him and spread gossipI always wondered why people delete their Facebook friends.  It is kinda sad but holds true to most people who delete.  Sometimes it is just to clean out your Facebook and start something new and sometimes it is just wanting to block the person from showing up in your news feed.  It used to bother me when someone deleted me, because that can really mess up your thoughts on who you thought were true friends, but now I don’t get too much drama in my head when someone unfriended me.  I know there is something more going on in that person’s head to feel as though they should delete.  For some it gives the person a type of control and makes them feel powerful with a press of the button to end a friendship.  Sometimes it is a hurt that is hard to deal with and instead of valuing the relationship with courageous conversation it is thought better to run from it.  It is a type of protective mode and I understand that.

I wonder how David in the Bible would have felt if he had a Facebook or used some type of social media?  Let us look at Psalms 57.

David starts out crying out to God and runs to Him for hiding as the storms of life surround him.  This is a good thing, yet notice David runs to God and not away from Him despite the circumstances of life or the chaos that is going on.  David realizes the power of God, the grace of God and His saving power with confessing his faith.  He also knows that God will rescue him from the liars who are so intent upon destroying him, using the words “I am surrounded by fierce lions, hotheads whose teeth are sharp as spears and arrows. Their tongues are like swords….”  David knew his enemies were setting traps for him and he was fearful of the future but knew he must stay faithful to God.  He then watched his enemies fall into the traps themselves.  He goes on to continue to praise God and sing Him praises for His loving kindness.  Davids wishes thru all of this time in his life , God’s glory be brought throughout all the earth.  David was hurt and he was scared of what people would think or view of him.  A natural response when you know people spread gossip and lies about you.

God is still faithful to those who run toward Him and His grace and mercy endures forever to either party.  The next time you get the urge to delete, if you value the relationship take time to ask yourself “why” you are deleting.  Is it because of unmet expectations, or hurt feelings or just a clean up.  Either or say a prayer over the person instead of hating.  Practice love instead of judgement.  Even in the midst of storms in your life, you can produce fruit for others to follow as God takes care of your enemies.

Facebook is network.  It links you to a person in years down the road could open an opportunity up for you.  I heard a man say once, “Don’t burn bridges or one day you may have no place to go”.

David continued to praise and worship God thru all circumustances!

What do you think?  Would David’s friends delete him or would David delete the people who were spreading lies about him?

Run Toward The Light

I walk in the light
Remember those scary movies you watched as a child?  They would always say, “Run toward the light!” if they were in some limbo area to crossover between death and life.  I find it kind of ironic now for we pursue the same thing knowing what the “Light” is.

We all are on a journey called life, and we really don’t fit into this world, yet we pursue the light.  As we pursue the light the less important things seem to be in this world and character shapes us to who we become.  The light is not darkness, the light is love.  The light is doing the right things.  The light is forgiveness.

If we fail to look closely at our thoughts, motives, attitudes and priorities we will relate with others in unhealthy ways.  The type of person we are is a clear reflections of the condition of our inner life.  Either we walk in darkness and chaos or we walk in light with peace.

images-3

We all have difficulty looking honestly at ourselves and it is easy to overlook our own flaws but oh how easy it is to see the flaws of others.  Can you love others regardless of the flaws?  We tend to blame circumstances for our behavior rather than taking responsibility for our responses.  Right character requires making right choices and disciplining ourself daily.

When we are not running toward the light we will:  react in unhealthy ways of being impatient, unkind, judgmental.  We will fight the wrong battles thinking it is our responsibility to change others.  We will rely on our natural ability to love, however no matter how hard we try our ability will never be enough without God’s help.

I don’t know about you but running toward the light is a daily action and though process.  It is taking time to be thankful for what you have.  It is being kind despite the circumstances.  It is showing and doing right things to others and to yourself.  It is having peace and choosing peace in your household.  So with all that said…. “Run toward the Light” it is your answer to get through this world!

I John 1:5  This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

Dog Swallowed By A Snake

loyalty swallowed up by a lieDo you have dreams?  Read what God showed me about dogs and snakes.

Jeff my husband had a dream a few weeks ago:

He was in a crowd of people in which he really didn’t know them.  A few of them had dogs, small cute dogs.  The Boa Constrictor snake moved in and out of the people.  The snake knew Jeff could see him.  The snake was more interested in the people’s little dogs.  Now the snake normally would wrap around its pray to squeeze it to death but this snake would just open its mouth and with one big swallow gulp right over top the dog.  This surprised Jeff to see such atrocious event.  Jeff had our dog Roxie with him and Roxie was barking at the snake.  The snake moved about his business without paying any attention to our dog Roxie or Jeff.

Now here is my thought interpretation on this dream…

Dogs in this dream meant loyal friends or loyalty.   The snake  especially a large one moving among the people represents a lie, a large deadly lie.  This lie passes through the crowd , although all the dogs was barking noticing the snake and barking at it, exposing it, the people were in awe without even realizing the danger of the lie. They just stood there looking at the snake. In other words, people see the lie, look at it and watch it.  It can spread very quickly through people.  They hear the loyalty warning yet they just stand to see what the lie does.  The lie is deadly.  The lie will gulp down the loyalty, killing it.   Loyalty is swallowed up by a lie.

what do snakes mean in a dreamI look at this dream to pray against lies.  I hate lies.  I hate gossip.  I hate what lies can do.  The lie no matter how big or small will move though people.  It kills what is most treasured.  Dead loyalty is a trust issue.  When a person believes a lie, the trust is broken, the friendship is dead the loyalty is erased.  The warning is heard barking danger but instead of running from the lie and removing  oneself from the crowd, they ponder to look at the lie.  The lie then strikes and the deadly result leaves one standing alone and hurt, lost without his friend.  His loyalty is swallowed up and the trust is no longer there.  Instead of love, only sadness remains.

What can you do when you are confronted by a large snake (lie) that moves through the people?  You will hear the warning.  Your loyalty will make known the danger.  You run from it.  The lie may not stop but don’t let it consume you or your friends.  Find out the truth don’t kill others.

Don’t be caught in the middle of the crowd but run from the lie whose result will be death.

Will you help me pray against the lies that move through the church, through families, through our government?

New Living Translation

Detox for the Body and Soul

detox with lemon juice I just started something new for the last two-weeks with this lemon drink.  I like it.  Can I tell any difference? Ummm unsure but I know it’s good for me.  Here is what I am doing:

Morning Drink: Lemon Cayenne Water

For the last two weeks I’ve been starting out every morning with a glass filled with water, lemon juice and cayenne pepper. It’s kind of like the master cleanse lemonade, but with no sweetener. When I drink it, I feel like I am cleansing myself with a dose of detoxifying goodness.

Lemon cayenne water is a great way to cleanse your body regularly even when you’re not “on a cleanse.”

Drinking spicy water may sound gross to you, but with the lemon, you’ll actually start loving it.  Now, I just add a pinch, and I love it.

Here’s why:

Lemon juice and cayenne pepper both have anti-fungal, immune boosting, and detoxification properties.

Lemon juice is great for digestion, destroying bacteria and cleansing the system –it supports the liver and kidneys to get rid of toxins.

Cayenne pepper increases metabolism, stimulates the circulatory system, aids digestionhelps regulate blood sugar and more.

Put them together and you have a very powerful cleansing drink!

My usual:

  • About 12 oz of water
  • Juice from 1/2 lemon
  • Pinch of cayenne (enough to feel the heat but not so spicy that it’s hard to get down)

So give it a try! It may become part of your new morning routine.

Now what about my soul?

detox for the soulThis got me thinking about my morning routine.  I need to study more to detox my soul.  I can read a scripture or ponder on a topic but then my morning can quickly go into checking Facebook  messages, twitters, email and before you know it I am boggled down with “stuff” totally weeding out my time with God.  I need to change.  It seems as though I can’t seem to find balance.  I need to exercise again since they tell me my cholesterol is a tad high.  Decisions, choices, work, children, and life.

Last week I had a group of ladies here at the house and we discussed the biggest issues women face.  One was balance.  The feeling words, were overwhelmed or stressed.

It’s time for a detox for everyone and I am not just talking about for the body but for the soul.  The Bible describes it as Renewing the Mind.  We must get ourselves to a place where we give God the time to meditate on His Love, His Word and His goodness.  Just like my new morning water routine, we need an immune upper from His Word.  We need a spiritual metabolism booster to keep us going.  We need an enemy destroying cleanse of the junk that penetrates our mind from the world’s words.  Now if you put them all together you have a powerful cleansing, detoxing, spiritual booster for the day!

This is my new morning routine and its much more than just a drink. 🙂

What is your morning detox?

An Artist Perspective

I attended the Joyce Myers Conference in St. Louis and heard Pricilla Shirer speak.  She told us a little story that I thought was worth sharing.

stone horse storyThere was an artist who carved a stallion from stone.  The stone stallion was marvelous and perfect in every way.  Everyone marveled at the details of perfection and how it looked so real.  A person walked up to the artist and said, “How do you get so precise details when you carve the stone…?”  The artist replied, “I chip away everything that doesn’t look like a stallion”.

Although a simple answer, the answer is so profound.  As Christians, this is exactly what the Holy Spirit does for us.  The Spirit continues to chip away the excess of what doesn’t look like Jesus.  One day we will stand without spot and blemish designed and carved by the Master Artist!

Challenge of the day:  What part of you needs to be chipped away?  Make a change today and let God take over that part of your life that you may be holding on to.

Mamma’s Fan

mama's old fan in my roomAs I lay in bed at night with my box fan blowing straight on me I try not to let my thoughts tumble through my mind.  Sleep, somehow it escapes me until I tell my mind to rest.  I lay there thinking of the day and try to focus on wonderful memories to help me go to sleep.  I think how my mother in the middle of the summer time telling me to lay really still and you will feel the breeze of the fan from across the room.  She would also tell me that while we lay inside the tent on those hot summer days spent at the lake although I don’t think there was a breeze flowing through a tent, I still believed her.

noxema for sunburnsSunburned she put Noxzema all over us, with bugs on the floor and us laying on sleeping bags with the sound of crickets we fell asleep with peace knowing we could sleep beside our mom.  Dad sometime slept on a cot outside because he would always go fishing early. We would wake up with the smell of bacon cooking, fresh sliced tomatoes, gravy and biscuits from a skillet.

I think back then we didn’t have air condition but an old box fan in our room.  The noise and the comfort of home, aw put me to sleep.  I also remember laying in the back of the pick up truck on the way home from those long week ends coming from the lake.  We would put a sheet over us and let it blow and eventually fall asleep before we got back to home.

The noise of the fan or the air blowing, the feel of the breeze brings the comfort of my soul.  It makes me smile.

I realize I was blessed when I grew as a child with wonderful parents and a mother who cooked, cleaned and made sure we were comforted even with the nightmares, she always made us feel safe.

As I pondered on how God looks down on us, He wants us to feel the comfort of peace and safety too.  Just as an old box fan in the still of the night it brings a breeze of the Holy Spirit whispering “I love you and I will protect you”.  I pray as you rest your head down tonight, think upon the childhood memories of sweetness and what brought you peace as a child.  Remember, you are a child of God now and He will never leave you nor forsake you, listen for His still small voice to whisper even in the middle of the night.

My Focus

My focus from CorinthiansNotes from journal: Reading Corinthians :1

One of the things I noticed as Paul was writing to the church of Corinth:

*He encouraged believers

*He wanted them to be blessed

*He wanted them to have peace in their heart and mind

*He doesn’t want to stop thanking God for having people in his life especially other believers

*He reminds us all to be thankful in how God has enriched our lives, given us truth, power and the ability to speak, and has given us forgiveness and grace

He also tells us:

* Don’t argue or have church splits

*Desire unity in thought and purpose

*Boast only what God has done

Sometimes we desire signs, or sometimes people think Christians are foolish but we must remember that Jesus has made us acceptable to God, pure and holy and that He alone purchased us.

In this little chapter it speaks much to me.  My prayer and focus is to always remember to encourage others and be happy for the blessings that come their way.  Every decision I make must be that of peace and to promote peace and unity within the hearts and minds of people.  I must always remember to be thankful for what Jesus has done for all of us, purchased us so that we may be a blessing to others.

What Is Your Purpose in Life Leadership Training

Before you can influence and engage others in working with you to create a compelling vision, you need to be clear about your personal purpose.  A leader’s personal purpose must guide and align the efforts of those who are to follow or their whole relationship is built on a false foundation.  Hidden motives and hidden agendas will sabotage trust, the key ingredient in any leader-follower relationship.

Are you servant leader?

A purpose is different from a goal in that it does not have a beginning or an end.  It is the meaning of the journey, not the destination.  Purpose is bigger than any achievement.  Your personal purpose is your calling – the reason you were created.  In the context of leadership, being sure of your individual purpose in relationship to your influence on other people must include serving their best interests or it becomes manipulation and exploitation, the absolute opposite of leading like Jesus.

What was Jesus’s purpose?  Servant Leadership.  The fruit of great servant leadership is realized when a leader seeks to send the next generation of leaders to meet the challenges of their season with all the wisdom, knowledge and spiritual resources he or she can provide.  One of the greatest services a leader can provide to his or her followers is constancy of purpose.  Stay on the course and remain true to the mission and values, don’t give in to the pressures of the moment.

We must as leaders choose results and choose people.  We must elevate growth and development of people to the status of an end goal as important as achieving other results.  We should focus on the development of the people around Him.  When we do this we are following Jesus and leading as He led, serving at a higher purpose.

You can read more from the book called Lead Like Jesus by Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges. 🙂
