Teaching About Prayer

When my husband asked me to speak on a Wednesday night, my first reaction was to tell him “no” and that was just because in this season of my life I felt as though I was too busy to study and prepare.  The Juice Bar keeps me hopping just to keep up with book work and ordering supplies.  I felt like a “plan B” instead of honored.  I am just being real and transparent.  I had several things going on that week and three days to study was cram time.

Although I am quite capable of retrieving in my head the knowledge of years of study, I am still Choleric and its hard for someone to ‘tell’ me what to do, not my convenience and yet still the topic of prayer.  Prayer… boring to me was not a good juicy topic even though it is a much needed subject because I have people who come to me and ask me how they should pray or directions on how to do it.  So I put on my creative hat and stayed up late to pull it all together.  Below is my sermon notes and the youtube clip.  Hope you enjoy! WATCH HERE

PRAYER: DIRECT COMMUNICATION a spiritual communion with God, in fellowship, interchange or sharing of thoughts or emotions; the act of sharing, holding in common; participation.

TO FORM A RELATIONSHIP OF LOVE, CHARACTER, ACTIONS (partner with someone dependence, alliance,)

In a relationship: We want authentic – truth – loyalty & protection – love – security – acceptance as well as identity. Prayer forms all these things in our human behavior when we connect with God.

If you look at prayer as a duty or works, you will feel guilty because you are not doing it. We all have been told maybe “how to pray” “what to say” “when to pray” “where to pray” based on how others either got results, picked a prayer from the bible etc…

We must look at prayer as a spiritual oneness with God, our mind, body, spirit, or very soul melting into His heart to guide us, show us and love us as we are as we conform to His ways & will and not necessarily our own. A bond that will not separate. The glue that holds us together.

The Lord God Almighty can do all things; there is nothing impossible for Him (Luke 1:37).

The Lord God Almighty hears the prayers of His children. He commands us to pray, and He promises to listen when we do. “In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears” (Psalm 18:6).
He answers prayer. “I call on you, O God, for you will answer me” (Psalm 17:6).

“The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles” (Psalm 34:17).

I know as a parent you can tune your kids out sometimes…. But we still HEAR THEM!

JAMES 4:2 Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it.

Everything we do in life, there is always an asking., and relationship is always involved – time, awareness, thoughtfulness and sacrifice – communication and asking

Child to parent…. Relationship – ASKING IS A PART

Dating…. Relationship ASKING IS A PART

Friendship…. Relationship – ASKING IS A PART

Marriage…. Relationship – ASKING IS A PART

We go throughout life with Relationships/communication and asking

Ask

Matthew 7:7  “Ask, and it will be given to you, seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Matthew 21:22 And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”

Mark 11:24  Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

John 14:13-14 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it

There’s an undeniable, unknowable, invisible mystery to the power of prayer.

We may dismiss it, downplay it, or even devalue its critical importance.

We may think it is a good idea in theory—if only it would actually make a difference.

Oftentimes people become disappointed and disillusioned when they pray to God to grant a specific outcome or desire and their “prayer” is not answered.

Many people think a miracle has happened when just such a prayer results in God’s bringing about the desired outcome.

Despite what we may or may not understand about prayer, God has deliberately chosen this particular vehicle to commune with his people. It is His way to partner in the fulfilling of his will. Prayer is the portal that brings the power of heaven down to earth.

Boys: Prayer bedtime – around the table (form a tradition)

Prayer lines at church –

According to the Internet 4,200 religions

Jewish Law: pray three times daily: in the morning, in the afternoon and at nightfall the people who remain standing on their feet after making three steps forward. This is made to get closer to God. The Jews have the special prayers for each situation in their lives. . Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Abraham introduced prayer in the morning, Isaac—in the afternoon, and Jacob added one at night.

King David, for example, declared that he prayed three times daily,6 and Daniel (in Babylon) prayed three times daily facing in the direction of Jerusalem.

For Muslims, the five daily prayer times (called salat) They also serve as a reminder of the connection that Muslims the world over share through their faith and shared rituals. Islamic teaching requires Muslims to engage in ritualistic washing of the hands, feet, arms, and legs. Prayers are on a rug and facing the sun.

Buddhists don’t pray to a Creator God, but they do have devotional meditation practices which could be compared to praying. Radiating loving-kindness to all living beings is a practice where one dedicates the goodness of one’s life to the benefit of all living beings as well as praying for a particular person.

Church of Satan worldwide has set aside the 6 p.m. hour every day to pray for the demise of the Christian church, and most specifically for its pastors. Surprisingly, most card-carrying satanists do not worship Satan or any other form of the devil — they are actually atheists. The Church of Satan, founded in the mid-1960s: “Satan to us is a symbol of pride, liberty and individualism, and it serves as an external metaphorical projection of highest personal potential. They do not believe in Satan as a being or person.”

The Church of Satan puts the individual at the center of the universe “a-theist” to an “I-theist.”

Jehovah Witness 90% followed by Mormon 85% pray daily followed by us Christians at 79%

Pew Research Center:

55% of Americans say they pray. As well as believe you should attend church once a week and read the bible once weekly. But 85% believe in God as certain.

The same survey found that 63% of Christians in the U.S. say praying regularly is an essential part of their Christian identity.

Women (59%) are more likely than men (41%) to pray every day. Ages 30-49 pray daily more than any other age group.

Education: HS or less followed by some college vs. those who had college/graduate degree.

For those who make less than $30,000 a year prayed daily followed by the 50-90 thousand (those who made 30-50 thousand prayed less) followed by those who made over 100 grand

Married people prayed more followed by those who never married vs. partners rarely prayed as widows.

Pray in Faith

Another popular idea is that the amount of faith we have determines whether or not God will answer our prayers. However, sometimes the Lord answers our prayers in spite of our own lack of faith. In Acts 12, the church prays for Peter’s release from prison (v. 5), and God answers their prayer (vv. 7-11). Peter goes to the door of the prayer meeting and knocks, but those who are praying refuse at first to believe that it is really Peter. They prayed he would be released, but they failed to expect an answer to their prayers.

In faith:

Acts : Rise up and walk!

James 5:14-16 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

Always & With Thanksgiving

Ephesians 6:18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

Philippians 4:6-7 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

God calls us to be modern-day watchmen. The Bible speaks of “watches,” which are specific times of the day or night. There are basically eight watches covering 24 hours. Every prayer watch has a purpose.
Today more than ever, it is important that we pray and seek the mind of the Lord: “Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). Major decisions we are confronted with require us to know God’s individual will for our lives.

FIRST WATCH: 6-9PM

  • Meditation and self-evaluation. Jewish tradition it is the end of the old day and the beginning of the new day.
  • A time of humbling yourself and allowing the Lord to search your heart.
  • A time of repentance and realigning your heart with His purpose.
  • A time to be strengthened, a time to quiet your soul and ask the Lord to remove any distractions from your heart.
  • After the business of the day is a time to release anxieties to the Lord before going to sleep.
  • This is a time to meditate on God’s Word. Meditation quiets our emotions, realigns our mind, and frees our will to do the will of God. What we could not hear clearly earlier in the day, we begin to hear during this time. During this watch, ask God to give you clear directions for the next day and about His call on your life.
  • Jesus used this time to Jesus also healed many sick people during this time (Mark 1:32; Luke 4:40). This watch is usually for those who have a strong apostolic calling and anointing to break strongholds and walls.
  • This watch is for seasoned Christians who are determined to do mighty things with boldness in the Lord.
  • Focus on your future; pray for your future and blessings.

SECOND WATCH: 9-MIDNIGHT

  • Release a canopy of praise and worship over your life. (Paul and Silias gave thanks – angels released on our behalf, a time of visitation and supernatural happenings of God.
  • It was at the midnight hour that God struck down the first-born of Egypt, which resulted in His people being released from captivity and set free to worship Him.  This watch is a time when God deals with the enemies that are trying to keep us from entering into His perfect plan for our lives.

THIRD WATCH : MIDNIGHT – 3AM

  • This time is known as the witching hour where witches try to control and take advantage.
  • This watch is a time for disciplined Christians to intercede and take back from the enemy the authority that he has attempted to steal.
  • This is the period to pray for God’s provision to be released (Luke 11:5-13; Acts 16:3).
  • It is also time for miracles and for applying the Blood of Jesus.
  • Often, we are awakened during this time with dreams God has given to us. God uses dreams and visions to bring instruction and counsel to us as we sleep. He also reveals areas where we need to concentrate our prayers and intercession. “In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while slumbering on their beds, then He opens the ears of men, and seals their instructions.” (Job 33:15).
  • The devil can also attack you in dreams (nightmares), so always pray before you go to sleep and ask God to keep you from the enemy’s devices.

FOURTH WATCH: 3AM – 6AM

  • Jesus walked on water. This is the time of the morning when the Israelites were delivered from slavery in Egypt
  • When we can see divine intervention in our lives.
  • Declare the mercies of the Lord over you life and those in your sphere of influence.
  • This is the time the Lord will give you faith and courage to step out and follow Him in the face of adversity.
  • Declare the newness of God in your life, new mercies, new favor and new grace, wisdom, revelation. Speak to the storms in your life (death and life in power of tongue)
  • Declare promises of the Lord!
  • This is the time for all of the enemy’s plans and strategies to fail. This watch is for gaining territory, establishing the spirit of prosperity and stopping the devil from hijacking blessings and favor.
  • This prayer watch sets our day before it begins.
  • This is an opportunity to set things in place before the devil and his demons have a chance to ruin it. Accidents, deaths, thefts, job loss, and any other acts of the devil can be stopped during this watch when intercessors obey the voice of the Lord and fill the morning with powerful prayers.

FIFTH WATCH 6- 9 AM

  • The first watch of the day, consecrate yourself to the will of God for the day.
  • During this watch, pray for such issues as healing in your body, relationships, family, government, and the economy.
  • Time for the Holy Spirit to prepare us for service (2 Corinthians 9:30; Ephesians 4:12)
  • Acts 2:15 says it was the “third hour of the day” (or 9:00 A.M.) when the Holy Spirit descended in the Upper Room on the day of Pentecost to equip the 120 disciples for service.
  • Regular work schedules usually begin between the hours of 6:00 A.M. and 9:00 A.M. As you step out, ask the Holy Spirit to equip you for the day.

SIXTH WATCH 9-NOON

  • Holy Spirit poured out upon disciples –
  • #9 represents gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit.
  • The Israelites used this as a time for corporate prayer. Daily prayer and instruction at the temple. We should use this for the power and character of the Holy Spirit to be released in the church – revival and spiritual awakening.
  • This is a time to watch for the Word of the Lord to be fulfilled in your life.
  • This is also the time to receive the supply of all resources needed for every project God has assigned you to fulfill (Exodus 12:35-36).
  • This was the time that the Israelites got everything that they had to use to build the Tabernacle in the wilderness.
  • Pray for the provision to accomplish whatever God wants you to do.
  • We must take up our cross and commit ourselves to Jesus Christ.

SEVENTH WATCH : NOON – 3PM

Jesus died on Cross.

Pray God would redeem the time, restore the years, pray for wisdom and revelation.

Rebuke spirits, decree the path of your destiny

The midday is the beginning of the sixth hour (12:00 P.M.)

This is the time when the sun is at its fullest and brightest. Pray that your life would be bright.

This is also the time to pray to not be led into any temptation, trap or snare of the enemy.

EIGHTH WATCH: 3-6PM

Jesus Christ died on the cross during this watch. (3:00 P.M.)

This is when Peter and John entered the temple and healed the lame man .

Pray for healing to be released upon those who have been captive to sickness and disease, miracles be released on the earth, miracles would glorify God.
___________________________

The power of prayer does not flow from us; it is not special words we say or the special way we say them or even how often we say them.

We cannot access powerful prayer by using “magic formulas.”

The power of prayer is not based on a certain direction we face or a certain position of our bodies. The power of prayer does not come from the use of artifacts or icons or candles or beads.

The power of prayer comes from the omnipotent One who hears our prayers and answers them.

Prayer places us in contact with Almighty God, and we should expect almighty results, whether or not He chooses to grant our petitions or deny our requests. Whatever the answer to our prayers, the God to whom we pray is the source of the power of prayer, and He can and will answer us, according to His perfect will and timing.

  1. Power Of Prayer – How do I tap into it?
The power of prayer is not the result of the person praying. Rather, the power resides in the God who is being prayed to.1 John 5:14-15 tells us, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him.”
  2. No matter the person praying, the passion behind the prayer, or the purpose of the prayer – God answers prayers that are in agreement with His will. His answers are not always yes, but are always in our best interest. When our desires line up with His will, we will come to understand that in time. When we pray passionately and purposefully, according to God’s will, God responds powerfully!

What Happens to your body when you pray?

2014 Injected with Dye – Brain Scan

“We see not only changes in the activity levels, but in different neurotransmitters, the chemicals in our brain.”

Because the brain basic body functions like heart rate, blood pressure, and the immune system, there’s evidence to show that by doing these practices, you can cause a lot of different changes all the way throughout the body, which could have a healing effect.” Dr Andrew Newburg

“The more you focus on something — whether that’s math or auto racing or football or God — the more that becomes your reality, the more it becomes written into the neural connections of your brain,” Newberg says.

Brain reacts in the frontal lobe as just as you were talking to a friend and that atheist had no brain activity.

Scientifically, we know this is true. It takes 21 days of focused thinking about one thought to form that neural pathway. It takes 63 days of thinking about that thought everyday to permanently wire that belief or thought in and to get it to become what naturally drives us without having to think.

As is the conclusion to everything, if we do what the Bible says, our brain and life will be shaped to have success, peace, happiness, and passion. That includes:

  • Memorizing scripture daily
  • reading the Bible daily
  • taking each thought captive and replacing it with truth
  • thinking on what is pure and eternal.
  • Be in constant prayer and conversations with the Holy Spirit to have him lead your day and every decision.

Do not be overwhelmed- this is a practice, a life long journey. The more you do it, the easier and completely natural it becomes!

WHAT HAPPENS TO OUR BODY

At such times, the body’s metabolism decreases, the heart rate slows, blood pressure goes down, and our breath becomes calmer and more regular.

This physiological state is correlated with slower brain waves, and feelings of control, tranquil alertness and peace of mind.

This is significant because Benson estimates that over half of all doctor visits in the U.S. today are prompted by illnesses, like depression, high blood pressure, ulcers and migraine headaches, that are caused at least in part by elevated levels of stress and anxiety.

Individuals who prayed daily were shown to be 40 percent less likely to have high blood pressure than those without a regular prayer practice.

I don’t believe that our prayer changes God’s mind or improves God’s disposition. God will do what God will do. Our basic prayer is: God, be God. Be the God you have shown yourself to be.

Would God be something else if we didn’t pray? No.

Would God hate if we didn’t beg God to love? No.

Would God ignore a cancer or marriage unless we remembered to pray and did so fervently? No.

It is God’s nature to love, to show mercy, to forgive, and to redeem. Our prayers don’t modify God’s nature.

What, then, do our prayers do? At one level, they are like a child’s cry for a parent’s help. They just burst forth. We see a need, and we cry to God. We feel a pain, and we cry to God. Our prayers don’t always cause events to change, rather they recognize God’s presence in and through the events.

Our prayers align us with God.

It brings God close to us so we can listen.

He suggests—we ask—we thank—we listen.

We must look at prayer as a spiritual oneness with God, our mind, body, spirit, or very soul melting into His heart to guide us, show us and love us as we are as we conform to His ways & will and not necessarily our own. A bond that will not separate. The glue that holds us together in relationship and that he will never leave nor forsake us as we live this life on earth knowing one day we will see him..

Shifting Your Mindset

A fixed mindset will only take you so far in life and it may not be where you want to goSHIFT (move or change) YOUR MINDSET

Romans 12:1-2

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

What we think, can alter and shape our world to a better place.   EVERYTHING in life starts with our mindset.

A person’s mind is so powerful, we can invent, create, experience, and destroy things with thoughts alone. It starts with our belief system.

The mind is the mental reasoning, or understanding is in itself neutral. What it is exposed to is what matters. It performs the process of discrimination between good and evil, and so supplies the data to conscience.

“The mind” is not just only our “conscience;” The “renewed mind,” or the mind acting under the influence of the Spirit.

First, of deciding what the will of God is; and, secondly, of choosing and acting upon it. RIGHT ACTION

The work of the Holy Ghost first begins in the understanding, and is carried on to the will, affections, and conversation, till there is a change in us into the likeness of God, in knowledge, righteousness, and true holiness. Thus, to be godly, is to give up ourselves to God.

OLD NATURE: The old way of thinking has not gone away. Many still struggle with temptations in their mind, bitterness, depression, fear, hopelessness, frustrations, problems.

But the battle still rages in the mind.

God’s Part vs. Our Part

God’s Part

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.”

2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV)

Three gifts are promised by God for every true Christian-a spirit of power, a spirit of love, and a spirit of self-discipline. we take, and apply.

Much of what we think about is directly connected to what we are feeding into our mind. And what goes into your mind affects your whole life.

Do you say, “I am not creative, I am not athletic, or I am not a math person?

To reach our potential we must start thinking different. STOP LIMITING OURSELVES.

GOD DIDN’T CREATE JUNK, stop putting God in a box and limiting Him in your life and how to change.

We are not chained to our current capabilities. We have the ability to change and neuroscience tells us that our brain can change it gives us a new look of renewing your mind.

Famous people who were told they could not be anything. Sylvester Stallone, Lucille Ball, Einstein

Dani Johns – raised on welfare, abused at 3, pregnant at 17, homeless at 21 – but at age 23 millionaire. She tells people who the poverty beginning wasn’t going to take hold of her mind.

Physiological Manifestation to Mindset:

FIXED OR GROWTH

People in a fixed mindset believe you either are or aren’t good at something, based on your inherent nature, because it’s just who you are.

People in a growth mindset believe anyone can be good at anything, because your abilities are entirely due to your actions.

In a fixed mindset, you believe “She’s a natural-born singer” or “I’m just no good at dancing.”

In a growth mindset, you believe “Anyone can be good at anything. Skill comes only from practice.”

The fixed mindset believes trouble is devastating. …Give up now.”

The growth mindset believes trouble is just important feedback in the learning process.

In a fixed mindset, you want to hide your flaws so you’re not judged or labeled a failure. Failures define you.

In a growth mindset, your flaws are just a TO-DO list of things to improve, failures are temporary setbacks. .

In a fixed mindset, you stick with what you know to keep up your confidence.

In a growth mindset, you keep up your confidence by always pushing into the unfamiliar, to make sure you’re always learning.

In a fixed mindset, you look inside yourself to find your true passion and purpose, as if this is a hidden inherent thing.

In a growth mindset, you commit to mastering valuable skills regardless of mood, knowing passion and purpose come from doing great work, which comes from expertise and experience. Leaders who want feed back if they have a growth mindset.

In a fixed mindset, you believe if you’re romantically compatible with someone, you should share all of each other’s views, and everything should just come naturally.

In a growth mindset, you believe a lasting relationship comes from effort and working through inevitable differences.

In a fixed mindset, it’s all about the outcome. If you fail, you think all effort was wasted.

In a growth mindset, it’s all about the process, so the outcome hardly matters.

Fixed mindset:

The brain becomes most active when receive information how the person performs (grade or score)– worries about what others will say with judgement – see growth as an effort as a bad thing, incapable so they lose interest or withdraw to protect ego (lack of motivation)

Growth mindset: Brain becomes most active when receive information – What they could do better next time, – focus most on learning – see effort as a way to grow – set backs are a part of growth and move on

Dr. Preformed a test: had children to do a set of puzzles and praised the kids

Fixed: “That is a good score, you must really good at this”

Growth: “That’s a good score, you must have tried really hard” (focus on the process)

When they asked the kids again to do a puzzle easy or hard – Fixed chose easy and Growth chose hard.

They all received the same puzzle. Results: Fixed scored very low and even lied about their scores because they couldn’t cope with their failure, however the growth actually did better.

States of mind or life perspectives are developed in one’s childhood environment and passed down from generation to generation.

Kids: How often do we tell our kids “You are a winner – cause you won” – fixed mindset – so when they lose, they believe they are a loser.

Our mindset is shaped basically from age 0-6 as we get approval or disapproval from our parents. GENERATION TO GENERATION – children are replicas of parents because of this.

Recognize that it is a fact and neuroscience is proven

Understand you can change because of God

Listen to God, listen to what you say to yourself and when you talk to yourself do it with a growth mindset with growth statements.

Beliefs are the blending of logic and emotions

Once established, beliefs are accepted as fact . They become our “personal operating system.” Believe in Santa/Tooth Fairy

Much like the operating system on your computer, our beliefs control how we sort and file every bit of input data.

Everything we see, experience, think and feel is adjusted to fit with our beliefs.

Our version of reality is a creation of our beliefs. We conform to what we believe.

Mindset – We can shift our fixed mindset to change thinking. These 4 was Medicine, Exercise, Diet, Stress (power of mindset)

  1. Pain meds delivered to patients – doctors who gave meds vs IV got better and healed quicker
  2. Maids exercise – Questionaire to maids – they believed they were burning more calories equivalent to exercising and they lost weight
  3. Shakes given to people – same shakes ( sense shake vs indulgence shake) given to people different times (what we believe, think, what we expect to determine our body response) some lost weight with the sense shake because they believed they would
  4. Work/Stress – (3 min video clips. MINDSET OF STRESS? Media tells us that stress us horrible – but if we look it as truth of stress is just uncertain. Our mindset determines our response. (video clips were given to half the group stating positive stress can be such as energy alertness, etc (reports: higher performance – sleeping better etc due to stress as positive)

Our mindsets determine our response to anything and everything we do in life.

Believing to be true….. our beliefs determine our response. HOW DO WE SHIFT OUR MINDSET?

That’s what’s holding you back from God’s best. John 10:10 Life more abundantly

Why Is a Poverty Mindset So Destructive – It is because it is FIXED

A poverty mindset is incredibly destructive because it puts us in the role of helpless victim.

AS Joyce Meyers says “You can be pitiful or you can be powerful, but you can’t be both.”

God wants us to be powerful spiritual warriors.  And he wants us to prosper, not play the victim.

The ENEMY tempts us to sit back as spectators to our own destiny AS We believe everything that happens to us is the result of outside forces and that we have no control over our lives or we say.

God is in control, so I’m sure He’ll figure everything out eventually and make my life better.”

4 Signs You Have A Poverty or Fixed Mindset

Blaming others is a sign of poverty and a sign of fixed mindset melissa phillipsClue #1: Blame

You blame the economy, you blame the government, you blame the stock market, you blame your employer (or your employees  You blame your parents.  You blame your spouse, you blame your kids.  You blame your genes or your thyroid’s or hormones and even your temperament.

It’s always something else or someone else. The problem is always anything or anyone else, but you.

Clue #2: Justify

Or you justify your situation by saying you “don’t really care”.  Ignore the bills…You justify being broke by saying, “Money isn’t important,”.

Not a single missionary can remain on the field without money.  Not a single medical facility can operate without money.  No church can keep it’s doors open without money.

God told Abraham:  “I will surely make you prosper”  Genesis 32:12

The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered  Genesis 39:2

Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper.  Deut. 5:33

The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground  Deut. 28:11

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.  Joshua 1:8

Well, you get the idea.  I could go on listing verses.  But the message is clear.  Faith and diligence bring prosperity not poverty.  Period.

When are we going to stop throwing God under the bus, limit Him and limit ourselves.

complaining is the result of a fixed mindset melissa phillipsClue #3: Complain

Complaining is the absolute worst possible thing you could do for your health: spiritual, physical, emotional, mental, relational and yes, even financial.

There is a universal law that says, “What you focus on expands.”  That’s why God commands us to focus on the positive (Phil. 4:8) .  When you are complaining, what are you focusing on? What’s right with your life or what’s wrong with it? You are obviously focusing on what’s wrong with it and since what you focus on expands, you’ll keep getting more of what’s wrong.( YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF LONELY BECAUSE NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR NEGATIVITY.

Clue #4: There is no personal development in your life. While this doesn’t apply to everyone, a lot of people “suffering” from poverty don’t spend time to work and better themselves. Instead of investing their time on something that will give them a return, they spend money on things that will only make them feel better in the present moment.

HOW TO GET OUT OF POVERTY FIXED MINDSET:

  • WATCH: those who you admire and wish to become, it allows you to pick up their behaviors, values, and even their visible ethics.
  • Expand your vision through higher goals and standards. Always be learning!
  • Stop believing that there is someone, or something, out there that will magically guide you out of bad financial times into good ones.
  • Take personal responsibility
  • Realize that nothing is owed to you. However realize that God has created you therefore your belief of limitations is limitless.
  • Cultivate an environment for success…you become who you are around. If you spend a lot of time with people consumed with meaningless things, you will get meaningless results.
  • Motivate and inspire others. In return, this allows us to gain new personal development skills and mentalities.

According to the Bible, our identity is not found in what we possess, it is found in who possesses us.  Our lives are hidden in Him and the actions that we take are actions of faith.  We are not identified by our meager possessions nor or we chained to our current capabilities, we are identified by our Father–who created us to be a reflection of Him and I know He doesn’t have a limited belief nor did He create junk. .

GOD HAS DONE HIS PART, NOW LETS DO OUR PART: RENEW OUR MIND !

The Power of Positive Thinking

 Thinking positive attracts positive outcomes!

The POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING

Romans 12:1-2

Verse 1 says that we should present our bodies — that is, our whole active life — as a living sacrifice which is our spiritual service of worship. So the aim of all life is worship. That is, we are to use our bodies — our whole lives — to display the worth of God and all that he is for us in Christ. Now it makes perfect sense when verse 2 says that, in order for that to happen, our minds must be renewed. Why? Because our minds are not by nature God-worshiping minds. They are by nature self-worshiping minds. That is the spirit of our minds.

The term “the will of God” three biblical meanings.

First, there is the sovereign will of God, that always comes to pass without fail.

Second, there is the revealed will of God in the Bible — do not steal, do not lie, do not kill, do not covet —

And third, there is the path of wisdom and spontaneous godliness — wisdom, where we consciously apply the word of God with our renewed minds to complex moral circumstances, and spontaneous godliness where we live most of our lives without conscious reflection on the hundreds of things we say and do all day. Romans 12:2.

Mentally first then fruit on the outside. “Transform” So transformation is a profound, blood-bought, Spirit-wrought change from the inside out.

Regardless of temperment/environment/how we were raised etc….

When it comes down to it, positive, optimistic people are happier and healthier, and enjoy more success than those who think negatively. The key difference between positive and negative is how what we think about and interpret the events in life.

Research is beginning to reveal that positive thinking is about much more than just being happy or displaying an upbeat attitude. Positive thoughts can actually create real value in your life and help you build skills that last much longer than a smile.

First seek to understand before being understoodPositive and negative thoughts can become self-fulfilling prophecies: What we expect can often come true. Persistent negative thinking can cause mental health problems, including depression.

The first step in controlling your thoughts is awareness.

Identify your negative thoughts. Cognitive behavioral therapy practitioners believe that we have the ability to change our behavior by changing our thoughts. Thoughts are the catalyst that lead to behaviors.

CANT CHANGE OUR BEHAVIOR UNTIL CHANGE OUR THOUGHTS – CAN’T CHANGE OUR THOUGHTS WITHOUT RENEW MIND – TAKES THE SPIRIT OF GOD TO DO IT.

The first step in changing negative thinking is to become aware of it. For many of us, negative thinking is a bad habit – and we may not even know we’re doing it!

SIGNS OF A NEGATIVE PERSON:

  1. Negative people rarely know what they stand for; they only know what they stand against. If the person you’re dealing with isn’t “for” anything positive, they likely have a negative worldview.
  2. Compliments are usually followed by the word “but”. A positive person (and even a neutral person for that matter) can give a compliment. Negative people can’t. What starts out positively (“I really enjoyed the event today”) is inevitably followed by a “but” (“but had they turned the volume down and shortened the message it would have been better.”)
  3. They aren’t accomplishing much with their life. Truly negative people rarely accomplish anything great. Because they are against so much, few people want to work with them. Stalled out careers, a history of frequent job changes, financial trouble and other similar markers often characterize negative people.
  4. They have no vision for the future. A negative person is almost never excited about the future. They have no compelling vision for what should be. They can just tell you why your vision is wrong. When you ask them for alternatives, they rarely have original or well-thought-out ideas.
  5. People who are negative have an issue with pride. They think they are better and smarter than you and by how they talk down at you makes them feel good and it puffs up their oversized ego. Their comments aren’t there to help you; they are there to make you feel inadequate and dumb. When they make you feel dumb, they feel superior and that is where all of this negativity fester from.

Quick TEST:

New Job: (do you think “what if I can’t do this or am I good enough?)

Exercise (do you think pain, change, time, discipline – or my body is going to look great and I can be healthy to live longer) Or, if you feel bad about not exercising or not eating healthy, all you think about is how little willpower you have, how you’re lazy, and how you don’t have any motivation.

Vacation (do you think $$ wasted, work to pack & plan or let’s go and relax and have good time)

Let go from job ( it must have been something I did, or wasn’t good enough or the company is going thru a slump)

Call/email from someone you don’t talk to often (what do they want or try to sell me something or I can’t wait to connect to them.

The waitress brings you a water instead of a tea, do you complain about it so much that everyone at the table knows about it, and get them to bring you another one or do you just drink your water and think it’s no big deal?

Do you think about her day?  Do you try to understand the other person first without getting upset cause you didn’t get what you ordered?

DO YOU HAVE NEGATIVE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE BRINGING YOU DOWN?

When you see anyone’s name come up on your caller ID, you get an immediate emotional reaction to it. Sometimes you’re thrilled to see the name and can’t wait to take the call. Other times you’re neutral. But sometimes you wince. Whether it’s a phone call, a text or an email, you respond negatively and quietly think “oh no.” That’s a sign that the person’s overall influence in your life has been negative, not positive.

How do you have a positive mindsetWe all have negative moments in our life….

Even DAVID was negative especially when he had his “pity party” moments, yet he still knew who to call upon for help.  As Christians we may have our faults and our times of negativity due to the circumstances, however we must keep the faith of knowing where our help comes from.

Psalm 13 O LORD, how long will you forget me? Forever?

How long will you look the other way?

2How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul,

with sorrow in my heart every day?

How long will my enemy have the upper hand?

3Turn and answer me, O LORD my God!

Restore the sparkle to my eyes, or I will die.

Definition: Negative thinking is the tendency to take the most unfavorable view of situations, or to expect the worst outcome in any circumstances; the practice of looking on the gloomy and dark side of things.

Positiveness is optimism; the tendency or habit of seeing and expecting the good in things; looking on the bright side; anticipating favorable results; hopefulness.

Bible says a lot about negative thinking….

  1. Giving place to negative thinking only bears bad fruit.

Proverbs 23:7 [If you give place to negative thoughts, you will become a negative person.] For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.

Proverbs 15:13 [Sad and negative thoughts weaken our spirits and lead to discouragement.] By sorrow of the heart, the spirit is broken.

Luke 6:45 [Those whose hearts and minds are filled with negative thoughts usually spread them by voicing them.] A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good: and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Romans 8:6,7 [Negative thinking is not walking in “newness of life,” but in the old carnal nature which is against God.] For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity [hostile] against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. [See also Eph.4:17.]

1 Corinthians 13:5 [If we’re walking in love, we don’t think negatively towards others.] [Love] doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil.

Hebrews 12:15 [Harboring negative, critical thoughts can lead to bitterness.] Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.

WE CAN CONTROL OUR THOUGHTS

Eph 4:21 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.

Take every one of your thoughts (beliefs, imaginations, dreams, and ideas) captive to the obedience of Christ. (II Corinthians 10:5)

Since all of your emotions, words and actions originate in your mind and heart, you can wake up every morning with the assurance that you have the power to control how you feel, what you say and how you act all day long.

No one is a victim. Guard your heart; you are what you think. (Proverbs 23:7) Also, whatever thoughts you sow into your mind, you will reap the consequences. (Galatians 6:7) You become what you think!

Spend a few seconds reflecting on what you are today and what you have. Everything about you is the result of what you have been thinking your whole life.

Day dreaming is thinking, planning is thinking, imagining is thinking, reacting to circumstances is thinking and wishing things could have been different for you is thinking. Your beliefs are your thoughts grouped together over many years.

One of the greatest truths in life: It’s not what happens to you (your past, present or future circumstances) or what people do or say to you that cause your emotions.

Your emotions come from what you think about after things happen to you! You control all of your emotions by what you think. Emotions are simply data telling you what you have been thinking.

YOUR THOUGHTS PRODUCE ACTIONS – PRODUCE HABITS – PRODUCE YOUR DESTINY

WHERE ARE YOU GOING RIGHT NOW?

Also, listen to your words and watch your actions and let them tell you what your heart looks like.

We can over ride any past thoughts and transform my life by the renewing of my mind

Let your mind dwell on only these eight powerful, life-changing words: true, honorable, right, pure, beautiful, adorable, excellent and praise worthy. (Philippians 4:8, 9)

No one controls how you think and thus, no one has the power to control how you feel, speak or act any longer.

You are never the victim of others or circumstances.

What Negative Thoughts Do to Your Brain

Let’s say that you’re walking through the forest and suddenly a tiger steps onto the path ahead of you. When this happens, your brain registers a negative emotion — in this case, fear.

Researchers have long known that negative emotions program your brain to do a specific action. When that tiger crosses your path, for example, you run. The rest of the world doesn’t matter. You are focused entirely on the tiger, the fear it creates, and how you can get away from it.

In other words, negative emotions narrow your mind and focus your thoughts. At that same moment, you might have the option to climb a tree, pick up a leaf, or grab a stick — but your brain ignores all of those options because they seem irrelevant when a tiger is standing in front of you.

This is a useful instinct if you’re trying to save life and limb, but in our modern society we don’t have to worry about stumbling across tigers in the wilderness. The problem is that your brain is still programmed to respond to negative emotions in the same wayby shutting off the outside world and limiting the options you see around you.

For example, when you’re in a fight with someone, your anger and emotion might consume you to the point where you can’t think about anything else. Or, when you are stressed out about everything you have to get done today, you may find it hard to actual start anything because you’re paralyzed by how long your to–do list has become.

In each case, your brain closes off from the outside world and focuses on the negative emotions of fear, anger, and stress — just like it did with the tiger. Negative emotions prevent your brain from seeing the other options and choices that surround you. It’s your survival instinct.

What Positive Thoughts Do to Your Brain

Fredrickson tested the impact of positive emotions on the brain by setting up a little experiment. During this experiment, she divided her research subjects into 5 groups and showed each group different film clips.

The first two groups were shown clips that created positive emotions. Group 1 saw images that created feelings of joy. Group 2 saw images that created feelings of contentment.

Group 3 was the control group. They saw images that were neutral and produced no significant emotion.

The last two groups were shown clips that created negative emotions. Group 4 saw images that created feelings of fear. Group 5 saw images that created feelings of anger.

Afterward, each participant was asked to imagine themselves in a situation where similar feelings would arise and to write down what they would do. Each participant was handed a piece of paper with 20 blank lines that started with the phrase, “I would like to…”

Participants who saw images of fear and anger wrote down the fewest responses. Meanwhile, the participants who saw images of joy and contentment, wrote down a significantly higher number of actions that they would take, even when compared to the neutral group.

In other words, when you are experiencing positive emotions like joy, contentment, and love, you will see more possibilities in your life. These findings were among the first that proved that positive emotions broaden your sense of possibility and open your mind up to more options.

TALK ABOUT LEAVING A LEGACY! You create the environment. That is power in your thoughts!

Tips on how to stay positiveGREAT TIPS TO BECOME MORE POSITIVE PERSON

  1. Keep a gratitude journal. Remind yourself of your blessings.
  2. Focusing on the positive. Push out all feelings that aren’t positive. When you hear the voice in your head say something negative, take a pause and substitute the negative for something positive.ONLY focus on the good things in your life. Realize that your thoughts do not own you. Stop letting negative thoughts control you.
  3. Only use positive words when talking. Stop CURSING your self!
  4. Practice positive affirmation. One of the most popular positive thinking exercises is positive affirmation. This means you repeat a positive phrase to yourself on a regular basis like “I deserve to be happy” or “I am worthy of love”. Believing that these things are true, and reminding yourself of it can help give you a more positive outlook on life.
  5. Believe you will succeed. Believe in yourself.
  6. Forgive yourself. Stop being your own worst critic. Don’t dwell on mistakes.
  7. Let go of the past. It does not determine your future so why focus on it? If you feel yourself ruminating on the past make a conscious effort to take your thoughts in another direction.
  8. Remember things could be worse. Understand that the situation is not forever.
  9. LOOK at your circumstances as an opportunity. Look at the big picture. Visualize a successful outcome.
  10. Relax and let things happen. See it from another point of view.
  11. Avoid negative people.
  12. Do something nice.
  13. Avoid laying blame. So the water bill didn’t get paid. You could get mad and start a fight with your spouse or roommate. Or, you could let it go, take it in stride and work together to remedy the situation.
  14. Be playful. Engage in physical activity – DO SOMETHING NEW.
  15. Listen to something upbeat. Music can be a great mood enhancer.
  16. Monitor your stream of consciousness. Focus on great memories – PHOTOS
  17. Concentrate on breathing. When things just seem to be too much to deal with, try concentrating on simply breathing.
  18. Find something to laugh about.
  19. Face up to change.
  20. Focus on finding a solution. Don’t wallow in your problems. Instead, work towards finding a solution and getting them resolved. You’ll be able to feel proactive and feel in control of your life.
  21. Believe the world is a good place.
  22. Stop making excuses. Take control of your decisions.
  23. Don’t play the victim. Bad things happen to everyone from time to time. Pitying yourself and wanting others to feel sorry for you isn’t going to make things better. Pick yourself up and start working towards a happier future.
  24. Don’t place your future in someone else’s hands. Your future is yours alone to shape. Remember this and take control of where you’re going in life.
  25. Create realistic goals.
  26. Choose joy. Every day when you wake up you make the choice whether to be happy or miserable.
  27. Believe you deserve good things and know who you are in Christ. If you don’t truly believe that you deserve good things in your life you likely aren’t going to encounter many. Believe that you are worthy for good fortune to come your way and it just might.
  28. Sometimes all it takes to feel good is to put a smile on your face. Practice putting on a happy face even when you just feel so-so.

Positive thinking usually attracts positive people, events, and outcomes. If you want to create an environment where you’re successful and satisfied, you’ll need the power of positive thinking on your side and that comes with renewing your mind with God’s Word and having Jesus centered in your life.

Our life becomes a spiritual act of worship and displays the worth of Christ above the worth of the world, when we allow him to renew our mind. Are you ready to put that into action?  Leave a comment below and let me know your great tips!

The Church, Who, Where, What

JEFF AND MELISSA PHILLIPS PASTOR OF LEGACY OWENSBORO CHURCHI gave a message the other night with the intent of helping people know they ARE the church.  Here is my message. I also had a Powerpoint to go along with it if you want to leave me a comment, I can email it to you as an attachment.

Acts 16:5 So the churches were strengthened in their faith and grew larger every day.

Why does the world need a church? What is the church, who is the church and where is the church?

As believers: We are a regenerated people saved by the power of God for a purpose in this world.

The word “church” means: Ecclesia = “gathering”.

We sometimes misunderstand that the church is a gathering – (like an event) but actually “gathered ones” who builds their lives around Jesus as Lord, King and Savior.

It is not an event but the event of Christ saving people to Him.

Jesus builds his church thru his people, therefore everything we do counts, not just a couple of hours that we are in church but all life where we live as the church bringing glory to God in ALL things.

Jesus wants to saturate the world with his presence as the head building His church in every place.

When WE understand this, it changes the way you see yourself.

You don’t “go” to church you “ARE” the church.

MOST PEOPLE THINK CHURCH IS AN “experience” an event – listen to message, sing, pray and look as though church is way above us. People gather to look up to find Jesus when the Holy Spirit is everywhere.

We attract people to come into the church (a building to find God) but a building is just a place for us to be a part gathered to be the hands of feet of Jesus. We are the church...be the church, not a building but an example

To be a better church is not to form a better program, not to rely on pastor, staff, volunteer but to serve together becoming more like Jesus and be the “expression” of Jesus to many.

Mark 4: Once again Jesus began teaching by the lakeshore. A very large crowd soon gathered around him, so he got into a boat. Then he sat in the boat while all the people remained on the shore. He taught them by telling many stories in the form of parables, such as this one: “Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seed.

As he scattered it across his field, some of the seed fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate it.

Other seed fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seed sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow.

But the plant soon wilted under the hot sun, and since it didn’t have deep roots, it died. Other seed fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants so they produced no grain. Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they sprouted, grew, and produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted!”

We are the church...be the church, not a building but an exampleMeaning: The farmer plants seed by taking God’s word to others.

The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message, only to have Satan come at once and take it away.

  1. Careless, thoughtless hearer are easy prey – satan robs the hearer. ( thinking of other things, zones off)

The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word.

  1. Hypocrites: Start out right, shows profession, many are glad to hear a good sermon but don’t profit from it because in reality, life is too hard to change – light of Jesus does not shine in them through actions and attitudes.

The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced.

  1. Hebrews 6:8 Worldly cares are great hinderance, trust is put in financial security – faith in money – status

And the seed that fell on good soil represents those who hear and accept God’s word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!”

Thirty fold: The number 30 can symbolize dedication to a particular task or calling. Aaronic priests were dedicated to serve at 30, in part because it was the age when a person reached both physical and mental maturity and could therefore handle major responsibilities.

We are the church...be the church, not a building but an exampleJohn the Baptist, began his ministry at age thirty. In the Fall of 26 A.D., at the age of thirty, Christ began to publicly preach the gospel (Luke 3:23).

Joseph, a type of Jesus, was thirty years old when Egypt’s Pharaoh placed him in charge over all that he ruled. King David also, when he began to reign over Israel, was thirty years old (2Samuel 5:4).

The number 60: which literally denotes to uphold, help or support. The widow ; who herself gave much support for the body of Christ in “every good work”:

The number 100: represent the fullness or completeness – accomplish a task, the glory that results from Grace, God’s miracles.

Think about this: Jesus Christ is not only willing to be known and to represent Himself, He is willing to be known and represented by us!

He asks us to be His representatives, His ambassadors.

To be sure, we do a poor job of this sometimes, maybe even often. He knew that we would, but chose to arrange things this way anyway. He knows you’re not perfect, and he invites you to represent Him anyway.

What’s Love Got To Do With It

Valentine's Day Flowers is a great way to show you love someone

Last night I got the opportunity to speak at our church about the facets of Love.  Since Valentines day is tomorrow and everyone seems giddy about the event planning on flowers, chocolates and cards, I decided to teach about Love.  Here are my sermon notes and in a few days, I will upload the sermon link so you may also hear the message.

I John 4:16 –

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.  We love each other because he loved us first. If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see? And he has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their Christian brothers and sisters.

This type of love that comes from God :

Daily Live in Love

There is love that is perfect love

Pursue it

Is forever love

Is Greatest love

Brings unity

Brings peace

Shows kindness

We have to receive it and put it on – abide in it

Sacrifices for sake of others

Love is a choice….

Greeks had terms of love:

  • Storge – affection that parents have with their children, (putting up with family members) Storge Lovers: life long friends
  • Philia – mental love of give and take – loyalty to others – general shoulder to shoulder friendship, Philia Lover: Philos love is a mutual, “give-and take” relationship,
  • Eros – Physical love – passionate love with sensual desire – love at first site – looks. It is based more on “self-benefit”.  Pure emotion without the balance of logic:

Erotic lover wants to know everything about the beloved from the first moment of their RELATIONSHIP, all of his or her experiences, joys and sorrows, who else he or she has loved in the past, how much and in what ways.  like to wear matching T-shirts, identical bracelets, matching colors, order the same foods when dining out, find out that their blood types are the same; they typically want to be identified with each other as totally as possible. Breakups are explosive and painful. Eros love can only succeed in the long-term if it progresses into a higher form of love. Otherwise, it will not last.

  • Agape – spiritual love – true unconditional love, expecting nothing in return –  no self benefit: Agape Lover: forgiving – “not a fall in love desire” but this love is always available for the opportunity to show that love.  They are patient, have the ability to wait indefinitely for the behavior of their love to change.

Other types of LOVERS:

  • MANIA (Possessiveness and Intense Dependency) (Eros and Game player )Mania is an obsessive love that, intimate  and intense, often includes jealousy, possessiveness and a lack of communication. Maniacal love can lead to domestic violence.   The constructed ideal of this type of lover is obsessed to where they are unable to sleep, eat, or even think logically around the loved one. The manic lover has peaks of excitement, but also depths of depression, with very few periods without a high or low, jealous – irrational.

A manic lover cannot tolerate loss of contact , even for short periods of time, and is distressed by a lack of the lover’s presence .

* crushed by real or fancied rejection, possibly to the point of suicidal ideation.

* manipulate the behaviors or feelings of the loved one,

* do not tolerate separation at all well.

The manic lover has a tendency to review past relationships and speculate about what when wrong – high level or anxiety,  have problems related to anxiety and associated with low self-esteem and a poor self concept.

  • Pragma (logical – sensible) a person who is unable to invest love in “unworthy” love objects. (You DESERVE ME) The pragmatic lover is keenly aware of the comparison level for alternatives that he or she has. Pragmatic lovers are inclined to look for a “deal – good bargin” A pragmatic lover typically assists the loved one to fulfill his or her potentials; for example, such a lover might make sure the love object finishes school, asks for deserved promotions, gets the attention or that he or she “deserves” from physicians, stockbrokers, or employers. And everything is planned – family
  • Ludus (game player) A ludic lover hates dependency, either in himself/herself or in others. This type shies away from commitment of any sort (does not like lovers to take him or her for granted). The ludic lover enjoys strategies, and may keep two or three or even four lovers “on the string” at one time. A ludic lover may even create a fictional lover to discourage a real one’s hopes for a permanent relationship. He or she avoids long-range plans. Self-centered and won’t listen

The Types of Love are explained. The Agape is the highest form of love however culture continues to seek self gratification instead of selflessness.

1973 book The Colors of Love, John Lee compared styles of love to the color wheel.

Three primary styles:

1. Eros – Loving an ideal person

2. Ludos – Love as a game

3. Storge – Love as friendship

Three secondary styles:

1. Mania (Eros + Ludos) – Obsessive love

2. Pragma (Ludos + Storge) – Realistic and practical love

3. Agape (Eros + Storge) – Selfless love

The human brain supports falling in love, which is why we have such a strong physiological response when we are attracted to another.

Most people want love but believe self gratification is in there too.

  • make me ‘feel good’
  • Love  MUST nourish it. : feed it, to take care of it, to value it.

True love is not about what you feel, it is about what you do.

*Euphoria Stage.  Emotion and feeling based but can be a long term with different value if love grows.

The more time you spend with a person the more you learn about their character and personality. The real test of love is being able to love someone when you know their flaws and short comings.

The ultimate goal is to love in Reality with some euphoric feelings and avoid the stage of ‘Offense’.

*Offense stage comes swiftly after the Reality stage because the relationship was built based on the feelings felt in Euphoria as opposed to a solid friendship.

The Offense stage is different from having hard times in a relationship.

The Offense stage: constant conflict and tension because of false expectations.

*Reality stage it’s not about how you feel, it’s about a choice.  The real test of love is being able to love someone when you know their flaws and short comings.

The ultimate goal is to love in Reality with some euphoric feelings and avoid the stage of ‘Offense’.

Humans have evolved three different brain systems to encourage mating: sex drive (lust), feelings of attachment (trust), and romance (being in love). Each of these systems plays a role in desire.

Lust. Sex drive is associated with a class of hormones called testosterone (even women have it) Playing competitive sports have been shown to trigger testosterone production; in fact, women get a bigger boost than men during a competition. Making love can also create the same effect. Studies have shown that sex raises testosterone levels, so the more sex you have, the more sex you desire.

touching someone brings more feelings of love because it releases a chemical in your brain to promote love

Trust. Feelings of trust and attachment are fostered by the chemical oxytocin. You can stimulate oxytocin naturally with touch. Hold hands while you watch TV, trade massages, or sleep in each other’s arms. Oxytocin, the love/hate hormone
.  Human and animal studies have shown that oxytocin plays a role in bonding;

While affecting positive behaviors of trust and bonding, it can also affect opposite behaviors like jealousy, envy, and suspicion. when the association is negative, the hormone increases negative sentiments”.

Love. The third chemical that drives relationships is dopamine, a key player in the brain’s reward regions that’s been found to promote romantic love. Research shows that —taking risks or trying something new—can trigger the release of dopamine in the brain.

SONGS: MRI and PET scans reveal that when you listen to music that excites you, your brain releases dopamine during the most exciting moments of the song and even in anticipation of those moments.

Some things a person does can produce so much dopamine that over time, the dopamine response lessens, which means you can lose the ability to feel any kind of pleasure at all. The usual culprits of this dopamine dulling effect are things like cocaine and heroin, which is good news for the great majority of us who are not addicted to illicit substances. The bad news is that if you’re addicted to fatty foods, the same thing could potentially happen to you. If you let rats eat as much cheesecake, bacon, sausage, and other fatty foods as they want, not only will they become obese, but their dopamine responses will start to attenuate over time. So while a small slice of cheesecake once in a while may get your dopamine flowing, overdoing it may have negative consequences on your brain.

Feeling of intense romantic love lasts only about 18 months to—at best—three years.

Brains of these middle-aged men and women showed much the same activity as those of young lovers, individuals who had been intensely in love an average of only seven months. Indeed, there was just one important difference between the two groups: Among the older lovers, brain regions associated with anxiety were no longer active; instead, there was activity in the areas associated with calmness.

Sacrificing Love:  It is the foundation to every key relationship in life.

Revolutionizes marriage

Fortifies friendships

Business : we treat our colleagues, employees and customers

Communities : reach out to people and make their lives better

Love is sacrifice and has a lot more to do with being a servant than with being a hero.

When you are concerned about the well being of others, you sacrifice.

  • Time
  • Energy
  • Money
  • Give up plans
  • Give up independence
  • Give up privacy
  • May have to part with whatever is most precious to you for the sake of someone else.

Hard because our Culture teaches exact opposite – Logic thinking doesn’t make sense or logic, it’s not fair.

True personal fulfillment never comes through self-gratification but opposite.

The right type of love never fails…. all other types of love will have you wanting but never satisfying.

Mark 8:34-35

Deny yourself

“Put aside your own pleasures and shoulder your cross and follow me closely.  If you insist on saving your life you will lose it.  Only those who throw away their lives for my sake and for the sake of the Good News will ever know what it means to really live.”

Matthew 20:26  … whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,” (throughout the gospels: the one who rules is the one who serves)

Luke 22 :28  The one who stands beside me in trials.  (Through everything you love)

It is only when we give ourselves to God and joyfully serve his people in sacrificial love that we find fulfillment and satisfaction that the world will never know.

In marriage = a lot of sacrifice

  • A good marriage enhances the life of each spouse, making it fuller and more satisfying than it would be if the marriage did not exist.
  • Loving marriage help both spouses grow into their full potential rather than squelching either persons dreams
  • Loving spouses put the other persons needs above their own

The highest form of love…..do you agree?

In friendship = willing to make investment in someone’s life

Why is it so hard?  Commitment

Try it – keep giving and giving – good actions not a feeling…. Some do good but then what happens when people come to the point they are running on empty? They get angry at people: how do you know, people become problems. (hermit)

God tells us not only to live sacrificially but also steadfastly. (persistent, loyal, consistently)

“I am done!”  I am burnout….

How do we get refilled?

Spending time alone with God – He is source of love.  Jesus did this many times, leaving the crowd and go pray.

(can’t depend us getting love from another person) Hosea 12:6 But you must return to your God; maintain love and justice, and wait for your God always.

Want peace? 2 Corth 13:11 :  Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.

Satan. If he cannot destroy, he will try to disgrace or distress us If believers were left to themselves, they would fall; but they are kept by the power of God

Burn out 3 ways.

  1. Spiritually :  Love tank is low – daily time with God before the day starts. Listen to Christian music
  2. Emotionally: Feel uninterested in others – Life itself happens (bad days) . replenish yourself through relaxing or recreation
  3. Physically:  Won’t listen, no serving, no confront or encourage people, no energy, easily irritated, critical, short fused, defensive and negative.  It is hard to love others and equally hard for others to love them.

Act as Jesus would act and do in all 3 areas.….

I John 4:12 No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.

I Corth. 13:1 : If I had knowledge, if I gave to the poor, moved mountains, but If didn’t love others, I would be nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind.

Love does not always want nor boastful, is not conceited, or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

slow to anger when abused, not quick of resentment, nor hasty to revenge when affronted; but exercises forbearance, suffers long, and bears much, and is ready to forgive:
Agape love is the highest form of love. Do you think you could reach it?

Love suffers long.

Love is kind.

Love does not envy.

Love does not parade itself.

Love is not puffed up.

Love does not behave rudely.

Love does not seek its own.

Love is not provoked.

Love thinks no evil.

Love does not rejoice in iniquity.

Love rejoices in the truth.

Love bears all things.

Love believes all things.

Love hopes all things.

Love endures all things.

Love never fails.

So what does Love Got to do with it… Everything… because without love you are nothing…

My Focus

My focus from CorinthiansNotes from journal: Reading Corinthians :1

One of the things I noticed as Paul was writing to the church of Corinth:

*He encouraged believers

*He wanted them to be blessed

*He wanted them to have peace in their heart and mind

*He doesn’t want to stop thanking God for having people in his life especially other believers

*He reminds us all to be thankful in how God has enriched our lives, given us truth, power and the ability to speak, and has given us forgiveness and grace

He also tells us:

* Don’t argue or have church splits

*Desire unity in thought and purpose

*Boast only what God has done

Sometimes we desire signs, or sometimes people think Christians are foolish but we must remember that Jesus has made us acceptable to God, pure and holy and that He alone purchased us.

In this little chapter it speaks much to me.  My prayer and focus is to always remember to encourage others and be happy for the blessings that come their way.  Every decision I make must be that of peace and to promote peace and unity within the hearts and minds of people.  I must always remember to be thankful for what Jesus has done for all of us, purchased us so that we may be a blessing to others.

Freedom of Not Knowing Why God Why Moments

The freedom of not know the Why God momentsEveryone has their WHY GOD WHY moments.

In my last blog we learned: In the “Why” moments: The inability to understand God is NORMAL in the process of spiritual growth.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding (Proverbs 3:5).

  • Have rest and peace in the situation – it is a life long journey
  • Reach a point where you trust God about it instead of yourself or circumstances
  • OK to ask God why just don’t demand them – why stage is like the child why stage
  • Position to seek God’s presence, provision, guidance and promises
  • Don’t try to understand the ways of God because it is impossible
  • God suffers when we suffer and count it joy to suffer or when trials come
  • God will help us on His time – He sees the bigger picture : the ending that benefits others
  •  We all have been thru something – somewhere there is somebody going thru same thing
  • God has to be enough and He is faithful is at present OUTSIDE of our understanding
  • God allows things to happen to make us stronger – makes us able to handle it and sees us thru it
  • God doesn’t cause bad things to happen – sin does – Adam brought it into the world
  • Everything we go thru is to bring Him glory – remember we were created to worship Him
  • If you change your thoughts – you change your brain which changes thoughts – renew your mind
  • When you go thru something be obedient : do what is right cause God will lead you
  • There is true freedom when you overcome something, easier to face it again if you trust

We can all agree In Life:  our goal is usually temporal

  • Happiness
  • Security
  • Prosperity
  • Success
  • We don’t choose suffering as a goal but be glad we go through it when we reap the rewards

How is God’s goal different from our goal?

God’s goal is always eternal. And He will smash every one of our goals if they are in the way. He will use our obedience to bring us to our Calvary, and He will use our sin to bring us there as well. He will take our fear and worries and make us face them, and He will reduce us down to where we know that there is nothing we can do to help ourselves. God is seeking to adjust us for the eternal ages. And if we only understood this, we would be thankful that He is doing this.

  • ALTHOUGH GOD GAVE US A FREE WILL The bottom line is that our wants may not agree with God’s wants for us.
  • Trusting in the Lord can require that you abandon everything you’ve ever believed about what brings happiness and fulfillment.
  • Sometimes you do get what you want, only to discover that it doesn’t make you happy after all, just disillusioned.

Many Christians repeat this cycle their entire life, wondering what they’re doing wrong.

Ask yourself: If God only worked WITHIN your present understanding, would it ever increase? No.

  1. God will bring you and I to the place where we CANNOT understand. Get that: We CANNOT.
  2. No secret formula
  3. Can’t pray enough to understand
  4. Can’t read the Word or study enough to understand
  5. Bring us to a place of “Do I believe”.
  6. View our adverse circumstances through the eyes of faith, not sense.

Our “why God” questions requires trust and not to understand – HOW DO WE GET THERE?

HOW DO WE GET TO THE PLACE WHERE WE STOP ASKING “WHY GOD” QUESTIONS?

To trust God, and not in our understanding of Him, requires a certain surrender to Him

  1. Relinquish control
    1. There really isn’t anyway to trust God in this way without dying a death to our self
    2. With death to self comes REAL understanding of GOD HIMSELF
    3. Death to self-will and self-life
    4. Lay aside our right to understand
    5. Surrender without understanding

If you trust God in surrender – the information you thought you wanted will become unnecessary. You will come into a REVELATION.

Trust brings you into surrender, which brings revelation – Revelation produces walking in spirit instead of flesh.  Trust is knowing the Word and promises of God.

Instead of letting our reactions, fears, worries, and inability to understand direct traffic, we allow faith to direct.

His ways are past finding out… even if we knew God in a way just like Him, then he wouldn’t be our God would he?

God isn’t worried because we don’t understand. He wants our soul for eternity.  He wants us.

We shouldn’t be worried or try to seek the “why questions”.

Seek God. Obey Him. Believe Him. Worship Him. And walk by faith. God is God. Trust Him, and not our understanding of Him.

Trusting God when you don’t understand….  we must reach a place in your relationship with Him and have such a confidence in Him that you believe He is with you in adversity even though you don’t see any evidence of His presence and His power.

God is a friend, our buddy, close fellowship etc…. but He is also awesome, all-powerful, mighty, can do anything, is with us always, we can’t hide, knows all and the beginning and the end….

In order to trust God we must always view our adverse circumstances through the eyes of faith, not sense.  Comes through the Word of God alone.

The secret lies in putting this truth into practice, by making it such a powerful theme in your life that you view every event, every sorrow, every prayer with the unshakable conviction that God is totally, spotlessly trustworthy.

CONCLUSION:

Why God Moment (really questioning believing in God & if He is really going to be with you) – Know Word + reshape our thoughts + increase our faith + trusting in God = brings Revelation as we surrender = walking in His Spirit  = abundant life Jesus came to give us to make it = goal of eternal life which is His will for all of us.

Knowing this will bring us happiness, peace and joy while living here instead of questioning the why moments.

Why does God allow suffering?  Why does God let bad things happen to good people?  Why does children die?  Why does God let murders go free?  Why did this happen to me?  Why is there starving people?  The questions of why will continue on WHY?

Everyone is on different stages/relationship with God: Lack of knowledge of word , revelation to the faith it takes from His word to fully trust in Him.   It will continue on until we realize that God is in control and without Him we are nothing, however what He wants for us is to trust Him enough for eternity.  Eternity is God’s goal and that is where everything we do or questions we ask should start with the ending in mind.  In other words, everything that happens to you that causes why moments or questions you may ask, should have attached to it – the eternal value in all your answers and decisions.

I recently also commented on a status from a woman who was abused as a child who asked the question why she was abused.  Here is how I responded.

Sin entered into the world, there will always be sin. We cannot control sin of others only ourselves.

Since there is sin Jesus was sent into the world to get rid of sin in people’s lives and to heal.

When a little girl gets hurt, although God saw it, allowed it, He didn’t want it nor did he do it. Sin is a by-product of satan and the fall of man.

When God saw you then, he sees you now and he sees what you will become. He uses what the enemy meant for destruction, to bring Him glory. When we give our lives to God, He uses the pain from the past that the enemy tried to enslave us with sin, and use it to help others. If we have never been enslaved before by sin, whether as a little girl or as adult, we would never need to be cleansed or in need of God for our healing. God allows things to happen so we will depend upon Him. He then directs our paths with the ending in mind, and as a result we are healed and we help others find God on their journey that has went through the same thing.

We must reach a place in our relationship where we won’t know the answer but we must be happy with not knowing the “why” but trusting in God enough to know the ending is much better than if we had never went through it….

We must walk in faith, trust Him and look forward to the future God holds, we cannot change the past but we can change the future.

Carp or Grouse?

A large Carp, do you complain? You may be thinking, what does carp and grouse have in common?  Well I am not talking about a fish in the water but a term.  I am not talking about a small bird but a term.  Both of the words have similarities.  Carp means to moan, grumble, find fault, grouse, nag, carry on, complain, Grouse means to gripe, object, protest, grumble or complain. When you look at the fish and the bird, You can be a small Carp or a really big Carp but the fact is you are still a Carp who likes to live in muddy waters and feed off the bottom of the lake.  You determine how big you want to be.  Grouse don’t fly very high, very fast and live most of their life on the ground in a limited area.  I used the carp and the grouse loosely since it was a term I thought befitting to the Scripture, not in any way down grading God’s creations. 🙂

So if we look at it this way upon the terms:  Do not complain, grumble, nag, find fault in others, pass judgement, belittle, laugh at, ridicule, express disapproval because if we do, people will do the same to us. So we shouldn’t be a Carp or a Grouse!

Today I read from Matthew 7 and Romans 8:.  I should not criticize, so I won’t criticize.  Others will treat you as you teat them.  How can we help each other if we criticize?

What does criticize mean?  Express disapproval of somebody or something or give considered opinion on something, and the synonyms are disapprove of, condemn, pass judgment on, complain, find fault in, belittle, laugh at, ridicule, or complain, moan, or grumble.

…because the way that you judge others will be the way that you will be judged, and you will be evaluated by the standard with which you evaluate others.

It is a never-ending circle.  So how do we break this circle?  We stop judging, complaining, finding fault in others, stop ridiculing or expressing our opinion on how we think things should be in that person’s life.  If we don’t, it will continue.  If we continue to talk about others, the judgement of the law says people will continue to talk about us.  You may be thinking, “Well I don’t care what others say about me”.  Although this is true, most of us want a good reputation.

Our lips must be governed by the law of kindness, as well as truth and justice. Christians are brethren…to break God’s commands, is to speak evil of others, and to judge them, as if they laid too great a self-control upon us. We have the law of God, which is a rule to all; let us not presume to set up our own notions and opinions as a rule to others but not ourselves and let us be careful that we be not condemned by our own mouth.

So with this said, Lord there should be only kindness and well as truth and justice come from my mouth.  To do otherwise is a sin and we are condemned by our own mouth.  Unprofessed sin will condemn and the un-renewed will is unable to keep any commandment fully. And the law, requires inward obedience.

By the Spirit the law of love is written upon the heart.

The favor of God, the welfare of the soul, the concerns of eternity, are the things of the Spirit in which believers seek and do.

Grouse Bird or grouse complainingWhich way do our thoughts move with most pleasure?

What are our plans and motives? Do we do things or say things that are wise for our soul or flesh?  Those who do so seek to pleasure themselves and are dead.  However a sanctified soul is living and that life is peace.  If we are living in peace or turmoil should speak for itself if we are truly speaking good or evil.  Love or carp and grouse.

The carnal mind is not only an enemy to God, but hostile itself with aggression or anger.

The carnal man may, by the power of Divine grace, be made subject to the law of God, but the carnal mind never can; that must be broken and driven out.

We may know our real state and character by inquiring whether we have the Spirit of God and Christ, or not.  We should not be in the flesh, but in the Spirit. Having the Spirit of Christ, means having a turn of mind in some degree like the mind that was in Christ Jesus, and is to be shown by a life and conversation suitable to his precepts and example.

So today Lord, I want to declare and teach me to watch what I say about others with the rule in mind, I will not talk about others in a way if they were sitting there with me, that I would do otherwise.  I don’t want to be a Carp or a Grouse!

Having Real Peace

Finding peace in God requires believing and trustingOur Christianity should be touching our lifestyle… Joyce Myers

Romans 5:1-5

WORD:  Now since we are made right in the sight of God by faith in his promises, we can have real peace.

PRAYER: Lord, teach us to know that peace is for all of us and I pray that we know that it is for us.  I believe the reason why we don’t have peace in our life is because we do not know that it is for us at all times.  We can have peace despite our circumstances we know to be true but living it out is hard for us to actually do while going through the trials or temptations because we get our eyes focused on the wrong things instead of you.  We say that we believe in your word, stand on your word, yet seeing people want to hurt you through their actions or words is very hard to take.  I don’t like it when the enemy uses people to cause division through justifying their actions in believing what they are doing is right and just.

WORD:  It is a place of faith to believe He has brought us into this place of highest privilege where we now stand and we confidently and joyfully look forward to actually becoming all that God has had in mind for us to be.  We can rejoice when we run into problems and trials for we know that they are good for us, they help us learn to be patient, patience develops strength of character in us and helps us trust god more each time we use it until finally our hope and faith are strong and steady.

PRAYER:  We must know who we are, and why we are called so God you must open our eyes and give us daily signs of who we are in Christ.  Our identity is so meaningful and important.  It is hard to understand why it takes years for us to understand who we are in you.  We must believe with confidence everything we go through is ordained by you Lord.  You are making us stronger and stronger, able to stand for the purpose of what you have called us to do and I am thankful for that.  I am gaining more understanding in what the Scripture says about counting it all joy, even the failures or the wrong turns we make.   I must trust you Lord that you are developing us to fulfill everything you have called us to do.  Help me to be persistent, consistent and stand despite of how people treat us, because in the end Lord you know our heart better than anyone else.  Let Your Holy Spirit fill our hearts to overflowing to endure what you have in store for our daily living.  I love you Jesus!
