Over 70% of people view change as a heartache followed by pain and misery. This fallacy needs to be identified we need to change the way we think. It is easy to get stuck in your own comfort zone. The comfort zone although gives us that warm fuzzy feeling it can also be routine, dull, boring and a life without purpose. Life can be a very uncomfortable place because of the pressures at home and work and worldwide issues like the oil spill, natural disasters and world hunger that we see in the news on a daily basis. Some rarely think about world issues because they are so wrapped up in just their daily life, their own world. Either way, which ever category we may list ourselves in, we tend to seek out the things that make us feel comfortable and secure. For some of us it is food, sleeping, entertainment or lack of responsibility. It could be vacations, hobbies, hunting or fishing. It could be watching a movie, sitting in the recliner or exercising. We know the things we should do and the things we shouldn’t do yet it becomes a constant battle to pull ourselves out of the comfort zone. I am not talking about living a Christian life but a disciplined life with purpose and effectiveness. We all can “be” good but are we “doing” good?
The danger zone is when we focus solely on our comfort. We miss out on an enormous aspect of the life God designed for us. Sometimes we need to step out of our comfort zone. But how far do we step and why would we want to? Comfort shouldn’t always be the goal. In fact, Jesus told his disciples to get out of their comfort zone and reach out to the world around them. He wanted them to get uncomfortable. How do we even begin to step out of our comfort zone? The danger sign is flashing right before our eyes if we refuse to get out of our comfort zone.
First of all don’t worry what people think of you. Just step out and do something you wouldn’t normally do or try. Make yourself try something new and bring some change in your life. It starts with trust. Trusting ourselves, trusting others and most importantly trusting in God. Trusting starts with facing your fear and taking risks. It doesn’t mean being ridiculous or irresponsible in decisions or take ownership but doing what God has called you to do. It could start with just worshipping in a different way or giving more in the offering and then sit back and watch blessings pour in. It could mean witnessing to your neighbor or the one sitting next to you at a sporting event and then reap the harvest. It could be going out to eat and ordering something you haven’t tried before. Start small and work yourself up like wading out into a pool, or if you are like some of us, we just jump right in to the deep part and get engulfed.
When you make the move and step out of your comfort zone, you will find a new confidence and a new faith level, not only in yourself but also in God. Why not start today, take some small steps to a new and exciting way of living. Pour more of yourself into God and you will find a new way of thinking and living.
Prayer: Lord help me make the decisions in which will pull me out of my comfort zone and go beyond what I think I may be capable of. In Jesus name. Amen.
