The Ripple Effect

rippleDo you know what a ripple effect is?  When you drop a pebble in water, it ripples and expands to eventually to the banks.  A ripple effect occurs everyday in all of our lives whether if we realize it or not in all circumstances in life.  In family, in conversation, in work, in our past all contains ripples.  People just don’t understand the ripple effect and think that the process never occurs.  It is foolish to think the ripple only stops with one to four ripples and that it never reaches the banks or doesn’t affect anything.

How is it defined:  the ripple effect is a term used to describe a situation where, like the ever expanding ripples across water when an object is dropped into it, an effect from an initial state can be followed outwards incrementally. Examples can be found in economics where an individual’s reduction in spending reduces the incomes of others and their ability to spend. In sociology it can be observed how social interactions can affect situations not directly related to the initial interaction. In charitable activities, information can be disseminated and passed from community to community to broaden its impact.

Every action, every decision in which we make ripples out to touch the very lives in which we are close to which has a direct influence.  The ripples will even touch the lives we don’t even know through the ripple.  Some ripples continue throughout many years, many generations which leave a legacy while others only pertain to the present day. The next time you go fishing, see rain drops in a puddle or skip a stone across a lake and see the ripples, take notice of the ripples and think about the ripples you create.

When you make a choice today in a decision, think about the ripple effect and how you are influencing others in your words or actions and choose to do so that makes the world a little better.

Prayer:  Lord, help me today to make wise choices and decisions so that I will be a shining light in all that I do.  Let the ripples of poor decisions or words that may come my way be put to a stop with none effect.  In Jesus name.  Amen

Galatians 6:7  Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. NIV
